We heard about them from a lady we met at a gas station at Dease Lake. She was traveling alone with her chocolate lab. She camped in her van most of the time and sometime stayed at a motel. Her goal was to spent at least one week in each state. We was very intriguing and delightful. She came from Michigan and just retired. We took her advice because she told us there was bear viewing in Hyder and that meant I would go back into Alaska one more time. It was only 35 miles out of the way. We ended up staying 3 days.
As luck would have it, we were reunited with our friends from the wagon train, Kathy and Eric
from Greenwood. We enjoyed a seafood dinner together at "The Bus" in Hyder. You can't make up stuff like this. Hyder has 40 year round residents and their food is flown into them. We paid $6.00 for a loaf of bread.
This is the campground we stayed at in Stewart, Bear River RV Park. This was an awesome experience all the way around.
We viewed grizzlies and black bears three times out of the five times we went to the viewing area. This is an area where they have taken many safety precautions although you still had a chance to meet one face to face. It was amazing. I have many bear pictures.
This glacier was totally unexpected. It came right down to the river we were driving by as we entered Stewart. It was hugh. The temperature that day was in the 70's and to see all that ice laying there was unreal.
